How I overcame my hormonal acne

Acne is a battle that I have faced for most of my journey with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).


Back in 2016 when I was diagnosed with PCOS, acne was one of my first prominent symptoms. The symptoms were then masked by the Mirena which was recommend to me in 2016. At the time I had very little knowledge of PCOS and the fact I was only masking my symptoms by getting the Mirena. You can read my blog post of my journey here.

Mentally acne was more damaging than what it has been physically. It was a battle every day to face the world and feel confident talking to people. If I was having a conversation with someone, I wasn’t even engaged. I was thinking “I bet you there are just looking at my pimples and thinking how disgusting they are”. Can you relate to this? It is an awful feeling.


Fast forward to mid 2018, approximately 2.5 years with the Mirena my skin blew out of control AGAIN. My cheeks and jawline were covered in cystic acne, I hid behind cameras and would cover my face in make up just to go to the shops. I pulled the pin on masking my symptoms in March 2019. It's now April 2020 and I rarely have cystic break outs anymore! It’s been a hard 12-month journey to naturally treat my PCOS and acne but I can thankfully say that I have done it. I overcame with acne.


I often get asked how, so I thought I would share with you 3 tips to get you started.

1. Invest in your health. What I mean by this is spend money on a Naturopath, Nutritionist, Holistic Health Provider, whom ever it may be to give you the tools, guidance and supplements to assist you. Though it may cost you a few hundred dollars a month, it isn’t forever and it is more than worth every cent.

2. Water. Simple right? Drinking water is one thing I really focus on daily. I try to drink 2-3 litres throughout the day. It is hydrating your skin and assisting your body to flush out any toxins. Your skin is the largest organ of your body which is made up cells which NEED water to flourish.

3. Skin care. Strip back to basics. Understand your labels when you are buying skin care or make up. Your skin absorbs in the ingredients from your products so be kind to it. I often repeat myself when I say there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It is true though. If you are reading this and currently fighting your own battles with PCOS or hormonal acne, I can assure you that if you put in the hard work and make some sacrifices you will see results.


Just remember, your acne and your symptoms do not define you! Your journey does, make yourself proud.
